Last night, Australia’s Impossibly Perfect Princess entertained an appreciative Perth audience that kept asking for more of their gorgeous heroine. The Singing Budgie left the building a long time ago. Kylie Minogue has proven time and again, but especially on this particularly gruelling comeback tour, that she can sing. She has an amazing range, depth and clarity to her voice, which has matured with her over the years. She has totally refined her craft, going back to ensuring that she entertains, interacts, and gives 150% to her audience.
Last night’s concert started slowly, with Kylie doing minimal dancing in the opening set. Initially I thought “gee, the past 18 months has really taken its toll…” However, as the concert progressed, I realised that it was the incredibly elaborate, detailed, and obviously very heavy costume that was restricting her movement. As the show progressed, the pace really picked up, and the energy in room reflected it. Kylie had the audience in the palm of her hand, and they were willing participants. During the many costume changes that added to the spectacle of the show, the crowd clapped, cheered and chanted “Kylie” just to make sure she came out again.
Her back-up dancers were totally amazing and entertaining, leaving the crowd exhausted just watching them.
For me, the entrance she made singing “Somewhere, over the rainbow” took my breath away, she sang the song so well and she looked so beautiful and WELL! But after channelling her inner Judy Garland in that moment, she then took on the daughters persona, with a Liza Minelli inspired Jazz/Blues version of “Locomotion” that totally rocked. One of the things that I love about Kylie is that she is just so beautiful, and classy, dignifed and respectful of her audience. There were lots of little girls there last night, who would have dreamed of growing up and being Kylie one day…and I am OK with that. You wouldn’t say the same thing about Britney Spears. In the audience just in front of us, former West Coast Eagle Glen Jakovic bopped along to Kylie with his 5 year old daughter. It was very cute!
I know I am a softy at the best of times, but I was a little unprepared for how emotional I felt when Kylie finally came out on the stage after such a long wait to see her. Her journey over the past 2 years has been such a difficult one and seeing her return to her dream, when it could so easily have ended differently, was inspirational and incredibly moving. When she thanked the crowd for holding onto their tickets after the tour was initially postponed after her breast cancer diagnosis, I was in tears. Her journey gives hope to so many other women, and I think it is us who are so lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky to have been part of it. Thankyou Kylie. Have a fabulous Christmas. Can’t wait to see you next time you are in Perth.
